How to save money while renovating the attic

Renovating the attic can make this part of the house comfortable and always energy efficient. For this to happen, here are some things you should do.

One of the things you need to do is add insulation to the attic. You can replace what already exists or add another layer. In this way, the attic will not be as hot or humid in summer and too cold in winter.

Instead of putting the air conditioning on the floor, you can install a ventilation duct so that the unit used to cool the rest of the house does the same.

To avoid wasting electricity by turning on the light during the day, you can install a skylight on the ceiling and have several windows made. In this way, natural light will make the room shine in the morning and afternoon. Just make sure widows consume little energy to avoid heat loss.

If you plan  to install   a bathroom upstairs, it is better to waterproof the walls, because in the long run, the water absorbed will damage the wood. This means that you will need to replace it later and this cycle will continue if you do not take the necessary precautions.

The toilet, if ever there is one, should be low flush or double flush. The same goes for faucets and the shower head, which saves a lot of water when someone is present.

Before lifting heavy objects upstairs, check the condition of the floor. If this is already low, it could break and the bed or bath on the floor could fall and damage the rooms below. This must be replaced or reinforced especially along the joints so that such an incident never occurs.

So, you do not have to spend for extra material, why not recycle what you have? You can surely repaint the old dresser or old table and move it elsewhere in the room. You can even sand the floor, repaint the chipped walls with the same color or install missing woodwork. This will help you save money and spend only what you need, even if it is only a small project.

Taking the proper precautions can save you hundreds of dollars when renovating the attic. Bringing natural light into the room will surely save you money instead of paying more for your electricity bills. Putting a water-resistant coating will protect your wood from damage caused by water.

When you have taken all the necessary precautions, you are guaranteed to enjoy the new room compared to what it was before. But before doing anything, clean the room and then look at the place.

If you are unsure about the condition of the insulation or flooring, call the home inspector who will give you an honest opinion about the condition of the room. If this person sees no problem renovating the attic, you should do it.
