Winter boat

Unlike your home and your vehicle that you can see and check every day in the winter, boats are more difficult to control. In addition, it is important to winterize your boat for better performance and longer life. Insurance policies can not cover damage caused by negligence or improper maintenance of the boat. When you winter, you first remove your boat from the water and place it in a covered and dry place. The boats left in the open during the winter would end up with problems. Abundant snow can force scuppers, couplings through the hull and even channels.

When you winter your boat, always check its manual. Since the steps and recommendations of the manufacturer concerning wintering are already indicated. You can also find someone experienced in wintering boats, especially if you are not completely sure of your skills or if this is the first time you own a boat.

Here's what you need to consider when wintering a boat

  • Keep the fuel tank full. This would ensure that there is only a small space left to expand. Condensation may cause the fuel to expand and cause corrosion and fouling.
  • Protect your engine. Run the engine before changing the oil. A hot oil will facilitate the removal of impurities or their drainage. Change the oil filters. During the cold season, oil was deposited at the bottom of the engine block. This could expose other parts of the engine to moisture and corrosion. To avoid this, you can spray mist oil and remove the spark plugs.
  • Outboard motors should be washed with soap and water. Then drain the engine water. In addition, remove all fuel from the carburetor.
  • Check the propeller if it may need repairs. You could have them repaired during the wintering process.
  • Clean the inside and outside of the boat. After cleaning the exterior, add a little varnish to the surface. This would protect the boat from dirt and dust.
  • Empty all water tanks. You can also add a non-toxic antifreeze in the water system.

Aside from the tanks, the water should also be removed from the marine strainer. Most of the time, the seawater strainer is not free of water. This could damage the seal and only show it when spring arrives and the holds are flooded. Also, remove all important items inside your boa, such as valuables, fire extinguishers, flares, defenses and other valuables, and electronic devices. You could have a dehumidifier inside the boat to make sure the mold will not invade the inside of your boat.
