Remember that you do the clothes, the clothes do not make you

Each season, we are confronted with the same puzzle: what to keep, what to throw and what to buy. If you're anything like me, when you walk through your wardrobe and drawers, you'll come across two-season jeans, denim skirts, shredded t-shirts and raging cargo shorts. For the upcoming fashion season, let's go for the old and the new - especially for casual wear.

What to look for when it's time to shop? Denim is still at the heart of the casual wardrobe, but some of the toughest denim treatments in recent years are out of date. Slubbing is always fashionable, but what you need to look for is embellishment. This season, the story is not so much rhinestones as embroidery. Look for women's jeans and men's jeans with stitched geometric patterns - the more the better. For example, look for jeans with triangles coming down on one leg or designer jeans with the designer logo prominently on the front, just below the pocket. Black men's jeans are back too, so keep an eye out for the sleek look of black denim.

Denim shorts also appear in the season's offers, but look beyond the shorts and opt for a knee style. It's a bit of a throwback to the era of pedal pusher, but the length of the shorts is significantly longer than in previous seasons. This is true for plus sizes and missy sizes.

Now, what about the ups? The story of color is that the season is solid, but the solids range from the bright blue of the marina to the coral, through the khaki sifted. Look for t-shirts in a variety of styles, from tank to polo to a crew-neck t-shirt. Again, the designer logos are prominent, either to make a bold statement on the front of the t-shirts, or for a more subtle statement just below the neckline in the back.

Before you go to the mall, be aware that some new designers are causing a sensation. Check out the online offers for new kids on the block. You will get a price reduction and the ability to stand out by being among the first to discover the next fashion label.

Also, remember that if you want to be fashionable this season, you do not want to look like everyone else. Always keep in mind that you do the clothes, the clothes do not make you. Here are five tips to customize fashion:

  • 1. Accessorize - Your accessories make a statement about who you are. Do not go too far, but choose unique pieces that make you shine.
  • 2. Attitude is paramount - You can wear a mega-dollar designer dress, but you'll look bad fagot unless you have the confidence to wear it. No matter what you wear - even women's jeans and a t-shirt - hold your head up and know you belong.
  • 3. Do not forget shoes - Bad shoes can ruin a spectacular outfit. Make sure your shoe style is in tune with the style of your clothes.
  • 4. Have fun - Do not be a slave to fashion. Have fun with this and do not worry too much for every little thing. Experience. Be bold. You can even surprise yourself.
  • 5. Share the joy - Do you remember those old clothes from last season or last year? Give them to a deserving charity. Your offspring are sure to make someone else's day.
