Are these boots really designed for walking?

It's this time of year again: the boot season. You have the choice between all types and styles, but to find the best fit boots you have to make some purchases.

When choosing between a stiletto heel, a kitten heel or a stacked heel, think about where you will wear them and how many hours a day. What might seem awesome about fashion shows might not be as practical when you run to and from your 9 to 5 office job.

"Your boots should only last one season," said Dr. Marlene Reid, a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. "Your feet must last a lifetime."

Follow these APMA tips when shopping for your next pair of boots.

  • Do your shopping later in the day (your feet tend to swell during the day) and have them measured before you start trying boots.

  • Try on boots with the type of hosiery or socks you plan to wear with them.

  • Look for boots that offer stability, preferably with a wider heel. Heels less than 2 inches tall are the best. Lean stiletto heels may look cute on the stand, but they put a lot of pressure on your feet.

  • Make sure the shape of the boot is wide enough for a comfortable fit on your feet. Some starter designs may be too narrow and cause blisters and onions.

  • Choose boots with a firm heel counter. The fact that the protective fabric covers your ankle does not mean that it offers good support.

  • Buy a pair of comfortable boots after going around the store. Boots should never be "broken".

  • Select a boot with a rubber sole and a pull on the bottom to prevent slipping. Remember, most fashion boots are not made for snow.

  • Consider the material. "During the winter months, the feet tend to sweat more because the shoes are closed and people wear thick socks or stockings," Reid said. "Choosing a moisture-absorbing leather boot on a synthetic material is a wise choice."

Good luck in finding the perfect pair of boots that will compliment your best outfits!
