1. The Oriental knot (the most simple one)

The most basic and simple way to tie your tie:

  • Drape the tie around your neck, with the thin end on the left.

  • Bring the wide end, under small end to the left side

  • Then bring the wide end back to the right, but now over the small end.

  • Then bring up the wide end from underneath the loop.

  • After that bring it back down through the knot in the front.

  • Finally, to tighten the tie, just pull down the thick end or slide up the knot to adjust.

2. The Four-In-Hand knot

Another way to tie your tie which is one of the oldest and easiest ways. It has a narrower shape that looks perfect with the narrow spread collar.

  • Drape the tie around your neck, wide end on the right, 3-4 inches below the thin end.

  • Bring the wide end to the left, over the thin end.

  • Then bring the wide end again to the right, under the thin end.

  • And continuously back to the left over the thin end.

  • Bring the wide end up into the loop from underneath

  • Then bring down the wide end, through the knot in the front.

  • Lastly, by pulling down the thick end you can tighten the tie or adjust it by sliding up the knot.

Best worn with a standard collar. For neckties of a medium to light thickness.

  • Drape the tie around your neck with the thin end on your left and the wide end on your right, slightly touching your thigh.

  • Bring the wide end across the small end, the left.

  • Then bring the wide end again to the right, under the thin end.

  • After that, bring the wide end up and pull it down through the hole between the collar and tie, to the left.

  • Then, across the front bring it to the right.

  • Bring the wide end again up the loop but from underneath.

  • Finally, bring down the wide end through the knot in the front

4. The Full Windsor knot

Alike the half version but has three times the knot size and is a little more complicated. It has a symmetrical and solid triangular knot and is worn best with spread collar.

  • Drape the tie around your neck with the thin being on the left side and the wide end on the right, the thin should be just above your belly-button (depends on height and necktie).

  • Bring the wide end to the left, over the thin end.

  • After that, bring the thick end up and through the neck loop from underneath and then back down on the left side.

  • Bring the wide end to the right, from the back side of the thin end.

  • Then, bring the wide end up, in the center.

  • Then inside the neck loop, bring the wide end down and on the right side.

  • Afterward, bring the wide end across the front side to the left.

  • Then bring the wide end up, through the neck loop from underneath.

  • Lastly, bring it down through the knot in the front.

  • You can tighten the knot again by pulling down the wide end and adjust the necktie by sliding up the knot.

Choosing the right knot

Of course, the knot will depend on the situation.

Some knots are not suitable for business meetings, and some other ones are not great to go on a date or a formal event.

However, with a bit of practice, you will be able to make any knot, and select the right one for each occasion!
